Hit your target market with your USP

Your Target Market

Your target market is that single persona that is at the very bullseye of your marketing. Once you have that persona determined, your advertising and marketing will have a much higher response rate. Your advertising also needs a program for testing and measuring. So let’s find your target market / target persona.

Who is Your Target Market Persona?

A marketing maven friend of mine goes way out on this one.  He suggests that you visualize the absolute best customer your could ever have. What are the characteristics of your target persona?

Here are the classic categories for figuring out your target market.

  • Age
  • Gender
  • Income
  • Education
  • Location
  • Marital Status
  • Culture

Make it Simple to Find Your Target Market

Assuming you are in business, who is your favorite customer?  I mean really.  Name that one person.  Now figure out how they fit in the classic profile.  Also, add whatever you want such as
  • How good are they at paying?
  • How do they stack up on a technology scale?
  • Do they live in a house, condo, apartment or in their mother’s basement?
  • How do they get their information?
The culture question really is where you can bear down and figure out what makes them tick.  Why do they buy your service or product and not the competition.

Describe Your Core Persona

Now the painful part.  Write down as many details of you target persona as you can.  The more you write, the more you can uncover that helps you gain other new customers.
Once you get this nailed down, you can start crafting your marketing to find clones, near clones, close relatives, and friends who have similar, if not all, the same characteristics.  Maybe people with only 50% of the same demographics are still enchanted by your siren call.  Cool. Finding out how they make their decisions is a whole other problem to solve.
